CHAPTER EIGHT

Shocking Realizations and Booty Dives

“What?” He asks, glancing over at me, his brows creased together. “Are you going to throw them and beat my four skips or what?” My stomach rolls like a hagfish making its way through my intestines. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be sick.

“Come here,” I say, heading back to the beach.

“What?” He asks again as I hurry out of the surf and onto the beach, with Akio splashing close behind.

“Where’s your mallet?” I search around the beach area, spinning around in a circle.

“It’s by the shelter. Tell me why you need it?” I run through the jungle and grab the mallet leaning against the log stakes.

“Watch, and I’ll show you.” I search around to find a good size rock to use and set the pebble on it. Kneeling, I gently tap at the pebble multiple times. Piece by piece, the hard, clay-like rock breaks off. Akio kneels next to me and inhales sharply when a big chunk falls off, revealing what is probably an uncut diamond underneath. It’s at least the size of my thumb tip or larger.

“Nooo way.” Akio’s mouth gapes open, and he links his hand on the back of his neck. “Is that what I think it is? How?”

“Yeah, sorry, Akio. You threw a bunch of jewels into the ocean.” He gets up and starts running back towards the beach. “There’s no way you’re going to find those!” I call out. I tap apart the next one and gasp when the inside is revealed. It’s a more petite jewel, maybe the size of the tip of my pointer finger. It’s a dark crimson color and so, so beautiful. Using my thumbnail, I scratch at the remaining rock remnants and slowly make my way back to the beach, admiring my booty.

It’s precisely what I’m holding—pirate booty. I’d gone to a museum in Florida when I was around eight years old, and there had been a locked display with rocks like these. One was partially opened, showing the sparkling emerald jewel inside.

If I recall correctly, the pirates would get the sand/mud and roll it around the jewel, forming a ball. They would then hide them in the cliff-sides. That way, if they were robbed on their journey, their treasures would be safe until they could return and retrieve them. Over time, the sand surrounding the jewels would harden into a rock-like pebbled shell.

When I finally walk back out onto the beach, it’s to see Akio diving under the water over and over again. He stays with it for the next hour or so—repeatedly going under to search around and coming back up for air.

I cup my hands around my mouth and call out to him. “Come on, Akio, let it go! You’ve been out there forever!” Meanwhile, I’m under the palm tree snoozing off and on, only to wake and find him still at it.

It doesn’t seem likely he will give up any time soon. I’m exhausted, and the last thing I want to do is be my own dunking machine.
